In this objective, children will learn how to add suffix -ed to bases to show “simple past tense”.  Over five 20-minute lessons, they will:

• Revisit past learning on tense
• Learn that suffix -ed is a vowel suffix
• Recap bases that are verbs
• Learn how to add the suffix -ed to regular verbs
• Learn that irregular verbs need to use an alternate base when written in the past tense
• Explore the different sounds that the suffix -ed can make when added to bases
• Learn four suffixing rules for adding the vowel suffix -ed:

1. Double the final consonant letter when a word ends in a CVC pattern, then add the vowel suffix
2. Drop the final silent e vowel letter, then add the vowel suffix.
3. Change the final letter y after a consonant letter to i, then add the suffix
4. Just add the suffix

• Use word sums to apply the suffixing rules
• Reinforce learning with practical games
