In this objective, children will learn to add suffix -s or -es to singular noun bases and regular verbs to show the meaning of “more than one” or “present simple tense”. In four 20-minute lessons, they will:

• Understand the terminology ‘singular’ and ‘plural’
• Learn spelling rules to add suffix -s or -es to bases:

1. Just add -s

2. If the base ends in s, ss, sh, ch, tch, x, y, zz, we use suffix -es

3. If the base ends in o, we often use suffix -es

4. Change the final letter y after a consonant letter to i, then add the suffix -es

5. Use an alternate base when suffix -s is added to bases ending in f or fe

• Sort words by the correct suffix -s or -es
• Recognise irregular nouns that cannot combine with suffix -s or -ed
• Identify that verbs that follow a third person singular pronoun combine with suffix -s or -es
