In this objective, children will learn how to add suffix -an to bases and stems. Over four 20-30 minute lessons, they will:

• Learn that suffix -an fixes after a base or stem to show “a person with a skill, belief, or linked to” something
• Learn the etymology and morphology of some places, understanding how they got their names and that sometimes we need a connecting vowel letter (CVL) to form the spellings of these places
• Use a passport activity to gather interesting information about the names of places (countries and continents)
• Recognise the difference between proper nouns and proper adjectives
• Recap learning of free and bound bases
• Use a matrix to build words with the free base ‘help’
• Solve word sums
• Recognise the difference between words with suffix -an and words with the ‘an’ letter pattern
• Combine -an with bound bases and other morphemes to show a person with a “skill, belief, or linked to”
• Apply vowel suffixing rules
• Reinforce learning with practical games
